Process Comparison : Injection Molding vs. Stamping & Thermoforming.
This technical bulletin features Jaco's comparison of two processes - injection molding vs. stamping/thermoforming and how a customer saved money. By inviting Jaco to participate at the start of their project, we were able to identify a UL material and the lowest cost method to produce this product.

Working Together To Achieve The Lowest Possible Cost.

Application

This application involved developing an electric switch cover and analysis of two processes thermoforming of a stamped plastic piece versus plastic injection molding.
Required Specifications:
Material should be UL listed with a flame class of 94VO
Available with a high quality hair cell surface finish
Narrow window of development and tight budget constraints
Quantity 5,000 required

Solutions Through Design

Jaco Products specializes in the molding, machining and stamping of plastic production components.

This technical bulletin highlights application case studies that resulted in superior products and lower part prices. In each of the cases presented, the customer utilized Jaco's knowledge of plastics processes, materials and product design to achieve the stated objectives and specifications.

Jaco can help you build into your product the design and functionality you require at the lowest possible cost.

Jaco's customer needed help in selecting a material to produce 5,000 electric switch covers with UL listed with a flame class of 94VO and a high quality hair cell surface finish. The product development was on a fast track to market and under Corporate pressures to stay within budget.

The Material
Jaco's choice of material was a resilient, flame retardant and dimensionally stable, acrylic/PVC plastic sheet, Kydex.

The Process
Jaco recommended a plastic stamping and thermoforming to meet design objectives within budget and their customer's time constraints.  Plastic injection molding was a processing option, but a large tool with slides was required.  The plastic stamping dies was 10% of the injection mold tool cost.

Receiving UL Approval
Selecting a stamping of a UL listed and recognized material proved to be a significant advantage in receiving UL approval of the customer's product.
