Product Conversion - Brass to Plastic.
This technical bulletin features Jaco’s conversion of a brass sprinkler head to plastic. We researched materials, processes then designed the product for injection molding and ultra-sonic welding, providing the lowest possible part cost.

Application

This application involved replacing a brass sprinkler head with a plastic injection molded sprinkler head.
Required Specifications:
Sprinkler must deliver 18" diameter pattern of water 24" from ground
Water pattern to be fine/gentle as not to damage newly sprouted plants
High impact strength

Solutions Through Design

Jaco Products specializes in the molding, machining and stamping of plastic production components.

This technical bulletin highlights application case studies that resulted in superior products and lower part prices. In each of the cases presented, the customer utilized Jaco's knowledge of plastics processes, materials and product design to achieve the stated objectives and specifications.

Jaco can help you build into your product the design and functionality you require at the lowest possible cost.

Product Requirements:

Jaco was asked to replace a brass sprinkler head with a plastic injection molded sprinkler head.

The customers objective was to market as durable plastic sprinkler head capable of delivering a gentle 18" diameter pattern of water 24" from the ground.

A gentle water pattern was needed by growers to water newly sprouted delicate young plants.

Our customer required a product that could withstand high impact. Sprinkler units are routinely dropped on concrete greenhouse floors by growers' employees.

Jaco's Solution:

Process: Jaco's solution was to ultra sonic weld a funnel piece to the hose coupling thread housing.

Materials: Jaco identified an extra high impact UV stabilized ABS resin. The ABS resin sprinkler head was rated for a maximum pressure of 65 PSI.

Prototype: Jaco supplied the customer with a 3D, CAD drawing and an SLA prototype model.  Customer was able to visualize finished sprinkler head and finalize design.

A two-cavity mold was furnished and Jaco delivered a packaged and labeled sprinkler head to a satisfied customer.

During the project development phase we worked closely with the customer keeping focused on his goals.
